Rings (Dress and Cocktail)

Dress rings and cocktail rings, made by hand

Not every ring needs to mean a proposal. Dress rings, cocktail rings and statement pieces are some of our favourite work, because they're often the rings that get worn the most. Self-purchase, milestone, gift, or simply because it's been a long week. These are the rings that show personality.

What is a dress ring?

A dress ring is anything that isn't an engagement, wedding or eternity ring. Cocktail rings, statement rings, fashion rings, signet rings, right-hand rings, anniversary upgrades, and milestone pieces all fall under this category. The defining characteristic is that they're not tied to a relationship or commitment, which means the brief can be a lot more playful.

When people commission a dress ring

There are dozens of reasons people walk in with a dress ring brief. Some of the most frequent:

  • Self-purchase. Marking a promotion, a milestone, a personal achievement, or a long-deferred treat.
  • A significant birthday. A 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th. A piece to mark the decade.
  • A meaningful gift. From a partner, parent, or to a daughter or grandchild as a piece of significance.
  • To match an inheritance. Reworking inherited gold or stones into a contemporary dress ring that gets actively worn rather than left in a drawer.
  • To go with a particular outfit, occasion or stone. A holiday souvenir gemstone turned into something wearable, or a piece designed around an existing favourite stone.

Coloured stones really shine here

If engagement rings are traditionally the home of diamonds, dress rings are where coloured stones come into their own. The brief is freer, the symbolism is different, and the result can be genuinely characterful.

Some of our favourites for dress rings:

  • Sapphires across the full colour range (not just blue)

  • Tanzanite, with its electric purple-blue shift

  • Tourmaline, in pinks, greens and watermelon

  • Opal, particularly Australian black opal

  • Tsavorite garnet (a vivid emerald-green)

  • Spinel, in pinks, reds and greys

  • Aquamarine, soft blue-green and beautifully light

  • Topaz, particularly imperial topaz

  • Australian sapphires, especially the parti and teal-toned ones

Our gemmologist sources stones to brief, and you'll see options in person before any are set.

Stacking with engagement and wedding rings

A lot of our clients design dress rings specifically to stack with their existing engagement and wedding rings. If you're commissioning a dress ring that will live on the same finger as another piece, bring the other rings to your consultation. We'll design the dress ring to sit beautifully alongside them, in matching or deliberately contrasting metal, and at the right profile to wear comfortably together.
